Since 1971 McPherson Oil (McPherson) has gone from one
person to 275, one white truck to 130 yellow ones, from 70,000 gallons of gas a
month to 12,000,000 per month, from 55 gallons of lubricants to 15,000,000
gallons, from one year to 40. In that time McPherson, headquartered in the
Trussville community of Birmingham, Alabama, has grown into one of the largest
independent fuel and lubricant distributors in the country. Charles “Mac”
McPherson started it all back in Oneonta with one used tank wagon. “I was a
horrible truck driver, I couldn’t change the gears well, I couldn’t maneuver the
truck well, but I didn’t have much choice. It was me, myself and I in the
beginning.”
Fast forward to 2011, a bad truck driver is now an incredibly successful
petroleum businessman celebrating a 40 year anniversary. Mac gives two major
reasons for McPherson Oil’s impressive numbers, “Build a relationship with your
clients where they take care of you and you take care of them. In turn, you are
known as having honesty and integrity, having the image of doing the right thing
and being responsible in the community. That is something you take a lot of
pride in; it is something that carries on forever if you protect it.” Mac is
just as quick to point out that while he may have started alone, the McPherson
‘family’ is the very foundation of their success, “That’s the beauty, there are
not any secrets. We tell everybody everything; that openness, camaraderie,
sharing and caring has built a family atmosphere as well as a tremendous team
and I am very proud about that”
McPherson has offices from Chattanooga to Mobile and serves the entire
Southeast with its Total Petroleum Management program providing a diversified
selection of petroleum products and services. McPherson is partnered with
quality suppliers from Shell, ExxonMobil, BP/Castrol, Conoco/Kendall and its own
private label brand- Proteck. Additionally, McPherson has been in the fuel fleet
card business since 1991 when it launched the Fuelman card in Alabama, Georgia
and the Florida panhandle. In April of this year, McPherson has launched its
new, next generation, fleet card named Fuelz. . In 2000, McPherson entered the
used oil collection business with its McClean division, and in April of this
year, McPherson has expanded its oil reclamation services and has relaunched
this business under the ReNew brand.
Forty years in any business is a remarkable feat, but in the high stakes,
high risk, often criticized oil business, it is phenomenal! To keep a reputation
